Start 7-day free trialThe formula AOV x Frequency x Lifespan gives you a starting point, but real LTV is more nuanced. Customer behavior is not linear: most churn happens in the first 3 months. Those who stay past 90 days are significantly more valuable. This is why LTV by cohort (when they were acquired) and by source (how they found you) matters more than a single blended number.
Customers acquired through different channels behave differently. Organic search customers often have 30-50% higher LTV than paid social customers because they had higher intent when they first visited. Email-acquired customers tend to have the highest repeat purchase rates. Knowing LTV by source lets you set different CAC targets per channel, not one blended target.
LTV is the total revenue a business can expect from a single customer over their entire relationship. It's calculated as Average Order Value x Purchase Frequency x Customer Lifespan.
LTV tells you how much you can afford to spend acquiring a customer (your CAC budget). If your LTV is $500, spending $100 to acquire that customer is a great deal. Without knowing LTV, you can't make informed marketing budget decisions.
A ratio of 3:1 or higher is considered healthy. Below 1:1 means you're losing money on every customer. Between 1:1 and 3:1 means your margins are thin. Above 5:1 may mean you're under-investing in growth.
Both are useful. Gross LTV (revenue) shows total customer value. Net LTV (with margin applied) shows actual profit per customer and is more accurate for budgeting CAC limits.
Churn rate is the percentage of customers who stop buying each year. High churn means shorter effective lifespans and lower LTV. A 25% annual churn rate means your average customer stays 4 years, regardless of what you input as lifespan.
