Hotjar vs Crazy Egg 2026: Features, Pricing and Limits

Hotjar vs Crazy Egg compares two heatmap and session replay tools, and in 2026 both look different enough that older guides describe plans that no longer exist in that form. Hotjar is now sold as Contentsquare, with a session-based meter and monthly billing, while Crazy Egg sells pageview-based plans billed only annually and also offers a free plan. This comparison uses both vendors' own pricing pages, FAQs and terms as read on 16 October 2026.

The short answer: Hotjar for a large free tier and monthly billing, Crazy Egg for built-in A/B tests, Arktis for store attribution

Choose Hotjar, now Contentsquare Experience Analytics, if you want the bigger free plan, up to 200,000 sessions a month with one month of data, or the freedom to pay month to month. Choose Crazy Egg if you want A/B testing, surveys, heatmaps and recordings on one bill with unlimited domains and seats, and you are happy to pay a year in advance: plans run from $29 to $599 a month, billed annually. Both are page-behaviour tools: they show where visitors click, scroll and get stuck.

Neither self-serve plan is built to tell a store which ad produced its orders, since Contentsquare keeps revenue attribution for its quoted Experience Platform plans, and for that Arktis is the clear winner. It captures ad click identifiers and UTM parameters on landing, matches Shopify and Stripe orders back to a visit, counts conversions per UTM campaign and per ad platform, and syncs Meta spend per campaign once a day. It costs $49, $149 or $349 a month, with session recordings and a 7-day free trial on Growth. Arktis has no heatmaps.

Key takeaways

Hotjar merged into the Contentsquare group on 1 July 2025, and hotjar.com/pricing now redirects to the Contentsquare pricing page. It meters sessions, sells self-serve Growth bands from 7,000 to 200,000 sessions a month, with larger volumes quoted, and lets you pay monthly. Crazy Egg meters pageviews on the pages you choose to track, bills every plan annually and includes A/B testing from Plus. Both now have free plans: Hotjar's is larger on volume, Crazy Egg's adds conversion analytics and unlimited surveys. Hotjar's trial needs no payment details and new Growth accounts get a 30-day money-back guarantee; Crazy Egg's trial needs a card, converts without a reminder and its fees are non-refundable. For which ad produced an order, neither self-serve plan is the tool; Contentsquare sells revenue attribution only on its quoted Experience Platform plans, Pro and Enterprise.

Hotjar is now Contentsquare

Contentsquare's help centre states that as of 1 July 2025 Hotjar merged into the Contentsquare group, and that Hotjar tools such as heatmaps, recordings and surveys are now found in Contentsquare. Ask for Hotjar's pricing page and you are redirected to contentsquare.com/pricing, where a banner tells Hotjar users they are in the right place.

The product to compare with Crazy Egg is Experience Analytics, which carries heatmaps, replays and funnels. Surveys are sold as a separate product line, Voice of Customer. Contentsquare's FAQ says Growth prices cover your whole account within one geographic region, however many sites you run, and that European customers are billed in euros and everyone else in US dollars. Our Hotjar pricing guide covers the merger in more depth.

Heatmaps

Heatmaps are in every Hotjar plan, including Free. Growth adds zone-based heatmaps, engagement zones, side-by-side comparison, heatmap summaries, live browsing heatmaps and a page comparator. Form analysis is only on the quoted Pro and Enterprise plans. Analytics collection is listed at 100 percent on every tier.

Crazy Egg splits heatmaps in two. Instant Heatmaps are free, created automatically on all your pages, and track up to 1,000 sessions a day with 30 days of data. Heatmap Reports, the paid product, add five visualisations (click, scroll, confetti, overlay and list), filtering by traffic source and device, AI analysis, historical data and export. Each plan includes a fixed number of reports: 5 on Starter, 75 on Plus, 100 on Pro and 200 on Enterprise. Crazy Egg's FAQ says it only tracks pageviews on pages you choose, at 100 percent by default, with optional sampling.

The practical difference: Hotjar covers the whole site within a session allowance, while Crazy Egg's paid reports are aimed at the pages you name. For a store testing a handful of key templates, Crazy Egg's approach is economical. For a store that wants to browse any page after the fact, Hotjar's is easier.

Session replay

Hotjar's free plan captures replays for 5 percent of sessions, up to 10,000, and keeps them for one month. On Growth the comparison table lists 15 percent of sessions captured with a minimum of 20,000, and two months of replay access. The quoted plans capture up to 100 percent and keep replays for up to 24 months.

Crazy Egg sells recordings by count: 50 a month on Starter, 1,000 on Plus, 5,000 on Pro and 10,000 on Enterprise, at a sampling rate you set per domain. Storage is six months on Starter and two years above it. Its FAQ says sensitive inputs such as email, password, numeric and text fields are masked by default in the browser, before data reaches its servers.

A/B testing and surveys

This is Crazy Egg's clearest advantage. Plus, at $99 a month billed annually, includes unlimited A/B testing, popup CTAs and error tracking, with targeting by device type; Pro adds targeting by country, UTMs and conversions. Hotjar's Growth plan lists integrations with Optimizely, AB Tasty and Kameleoon instead, and native A/B testing appears as an add-on on Contentsquare's quoted Experience Platform Pro plan.

Surveys run the other way round in packaging. Crazy Egg includes unlimited surveys and responses on every plan, free included. Hotjar's free Experience Analytics plan has basic surveys, and full surveys are a second product: Voice of Customer is free for 100 responses a month and listed from 79 euros a month on Growth, the figure shown beside yearly pricing, for 500 to 100,000 responses, with unlimited response access. If you need both, Contentsquare takes a further 10 percent off the cheaper of two paid Growth plans.

Pricing, price by price

Crazy Egg's prices are fixed by plan and billed for twelve months at once: $348 a year for Starter, $1,188 for Plus, $2,988 for Pro and $7,188 for Enterprise, shown in US dollars from Sweden.

Hotjar's Growth price follows a session slider. These are the monthly prices shown from Sweden on 16 October 2026, in euros.

The slider has more steps than this table shows, including 10,000, 20,000, 30,000, 35,000, 75,000, 85,000 and 120,000 sessions. The yearly total is our arithmetic. The 20 percent yearly discount applies only when you pay in the product by card or PayPal, not on invoice.

Take an example store with invented numbers: 40,000 sessions a month, three pageviews each, and it wants heatmaps across the site. Hotjar's Free plan covers the volume if one month of data and 5 percent replay capture are enough. On Growth it sits in the 45,000 band at 219 euros a month on monthly billing, or 2,100 a year on yearly billing. On Crazy Egg, 120,000 tracked pageviews need Plus at $1,188 for the year, or less if the store tracks fewer pages or samples them. The same store's 40,000 sessions mean at most 40,000 visitors, well inside Arktis Growth at $149 a month, which adds session recordings and conversion tracking, lists 30 days of data retention and has a 7-day free trial. Our Crazy Egg pricing guide goes through each plan.

Limits and terms

Hotjar's Growth plans need no annual contract. On monthly billing you cancel by downgrading to Free, effective at the end of the month. New Growth accounts get a 30-day money-back guarantee, and the 15-day trial needs no payment details and does not charge automatically. Sessions end after 30 minutes of inactivity, and when the allowance runs out you get no new heatmap or funnel data until the monthly reset. Free includes one project, Growth three.

Crazy Egg never charges overages: collection pauses and resumes on the first of the next month. Domains and team members are unlimited on every plan. Its terms, last updated on 2 April 2026, say fees are billed in advance and non-refundable, that a trial turns into a paid plan unless cancelled, with no reminder before it ends, and that cancelling works only through the link on the Account, Your Profile page.

Which should you choose

Take Hotjar if you want to start free at real volume, pay monthly, and browse heatmaps and replays across the whole site. Take Crazy Egg if A/B testing and surveys belong in the same tool, you want many sites and team members under one plan, since Crazy Egg makes both unlimited, and a year's commitment suits you. For a free alternative to both, our Hotjar vs Clarity comparison covers Microsoft's tool.

Where Arktis fits, and where it does not

Arktis is the product we build, so weigh this accordingly. It has no heatmaps, no A/B testing, no surveys and no popups, and no free plan. If the job is page design, pick Hotjar or Crazy Egg. What Arktis adds is the money side: the tracker holds gclid, fbclid, msclkid, ttclid and other click identifiers against the visitor across sessions, Shopify orders arrive by webhook and are matched on email where the store has identified the visitor, otherwise on the UTM source of a session from the previous 24 hours, which can be another visitor's session, and unmatched orders are kept, unattributed. Recordings on Growth and Scale can be filtered to visitors who converted and to sessions that included a given page, with capture buffered in the browser and discarded unless the visitor gives consent. Meta spend syncs per campaign; Google, TikTok and other spend is entered by hand per platform and period.

To see which UTM campaigns and ad platforms your conversions came from, start the 7-day Growth trial, or read the tiers on the pricing page. Arktis vs Hotjar and heatmap tools compared cover the wider field.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Hotjar and Crazy Egg?

Hotjar, now sold as Contentsquare, meters monthly sessions, offers monthly or yearly billing and has a free plan of up to 200,000 sessions. Crazy Egg meters pageviews on the pages you choose to track, bills every plan annually and includes A/B testing from its $99 Plus plan. Both offer heatmaps, session replay and surveys.

Is Hotjar or Crazy Egg cheaper?

It depends on how you count traffic. Crazy Egg starts at $29 a month billed annually, which is $348 a year, for 5,000 tracked pageviews. Hotjar's Growth plan started at 49 euros a month, or 39 a month billed yearly, for 7,000 sessions when viewed from Sweden on 16 October 2026, and its free plan covers up to 200,000 sessions with one month of data.

Does Crazy Egg have a free plan?

Yes. Crazy Egg's free plan needs no credit card and includes Instant Heatmaps, web analytics, conversion analytics and surveys. Instant Heatmaps track up to 1,000 sessions a day and keep 30 days of data, while recordings and A/B testing need a paid plan.

Which has better A/B testing, Hotjar or Crazy Egg?

Crazy Egg includes unlimited A/B testing from its Plus plan at $99 a month billed annually, with more targeting options on Pro. Hotjar's Growth plan integrates with testing tools such as Optimizely, AB Tasty and Kameleoon, and native A/B testing sits on Contentsquare's quoted Experience Platform plans.

Can Hotjar or Crazy Egg show which ad produced an order?

Neither matches orders to the ad that produced them on its self-serve plans: Crazy Egg's web analytics breaks traffic down by campaign, but its conversion reports count conversions by page and element, and Contentsquare keeps revenue attribution for its quoted platform plans. For a store, Arktis is the clear winner here: it matches orders back to a visit and, where the visit carried an ad click identifier, to the ad platform, and counts conversions per UTM campaign and per ad platform. Plans are $49, $149 and $349 a month, with a 7-day free trial on Growth.
