Shopify Agentic Storefronts: AI Channels, Checkout, Orders

Shopify agentic storefronts put a store's products inside AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta's Muse, and they are switched on by default for eligible stores. Some of those channels send the shopper to your own checkout, while others take the payment inside the chat, and that difference decides what your analytics and attribution can see. This guide sets out what Shopify's help centre said about each channel on 26 October 2026, how the orders appear in your admin, and what changes for measurement.

The short answer: agentic storefronts sell inside AI chats, and Arktis counts the visits they send

Agentic storefronts are Shopify's way of making your products discoverable and buyable in AI channels, managed under Sales channels, then Agentic, in the Shopify admin. ChatGPT sends shoppers to your own online store checkout. Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta surfaces such as Muse can instead complete the purchase in a Shopify-powered direct checkout inside the AI channel, which is on by default for eligible stores, and Shopify says Google Analytics and custom pixels do not fire there. Either way, the order lands in your Shopify admin with channel or referrer attribution.

Arktis does not replace Shopify's Agentic report, which is the record for sales made inside an AI channel. What Arktis is the clear winner for is the store side of the same traffic: its AI Assistant Traffic panel counts sessions and conversions from ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and similar assistants next to your ad clicks, UTM campaigns and dark social, and orders it cannot match to a visit stay in your revenue under Direct instead of disappearing. Plans are $49, $149 and $349 a month, and Growth, which adds session recordings, has a 7-day free trial.

Key takeaways

Agentic storefronts are active by default, and the default setting, Allow Shopify to manage for me, also turns on direct checkout where it is supported and enrols your store in future AI channels automatically. ChatGPT orders go through your own checkout, so your analytics sees them. Direct-checkout orders in Google AI Mode and Gemini, Copilot and Meta never touch your storefront, so no browser pixel or analytics script records the purchase, though the order still appears in your admin. For those sales, Shopify's Agentic report is the source of truth, and any tool that matches orders to site visits has no visit to match them to.

What Shopify agentic storefronts are

A shopper asks an assistant for, say, navy running shorts, the assistant searches for products that fit, and your products can appear in the answer. Shopify supplies the product data: ChatGPT, Copilot and Meta get it through Shopify Catalog, although Meta's shoppable ads also need the Facebook and Instagram sales channel, while Google AI Mode and Gemini get it through the Google & YouTube sales channel or Google Merchant Center.

On 24 March 2026 Shopify announced that millions of merchants could sell to ChatGPT users through agentic storefronts, with Copilot, AI Mode in Google Search and the Gemini app managed from the same place. The same announcement made the Agentic plan publicly available, which lets brands that do not run their store on Shopify add products to Shopify Catalog. On that plan, direct checkout is deactivated by default.

To take part, a store has to accept Shopify's Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service, have products eligible for Shopify Catalog, and have its terms of service, privacy policy and return and refund policy filled in. Each channel page says there are no fees beyond standard payment processing. B2B-only products are excluded.

Which AI channels check out in their own app

ChatGPT

Shopify calls ChatGPT a discovery-focused referrer. Shoppers complete their purchase on your online store checkout, inside ChatGPT's in-app browser on mobile or in a new tab on the web, so your checkout customisations, branding and payment methods all carry over. There is no direct checkout setting for ChatGPT. To sell there, your store must sell to customers in the United States, but it can be based anywhere.

Google AI Mode and Gemini

Google AI Mode and Gemini can complete the purchase in a Shopify-powered direct checkout inside the conversation, paid by credit or debit card. Shopify says the channel and its direct checkout are still rolling out, so they may not be live for your store yet. You must sell to customers in the United States, Canada or Australia and have a valid Google Merchant Center account. If you turn direct checkout off, shoppers can still find your products there but are sent to your online store to buy.

Microsoft Copilot

Copilot works the same way, with direct checkout on by default for eligible stores and shown only to customers in the United States.

Meta surfaces such as Muse

Meta's direct checkout covers Meta surfaces, including Muse where available, for customers in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and Singapore. If checkout needs information Meta cannot collect, the shopper is sent to your own checkout in Meta's in-app browser with the cart kept. Shopify says orders placed on Meta surfaces are attributed to Meta and that you remain the merchant of record.

Shop and Shop MCP

The Shop app also counts as an agentic storefront and is included in your agentic reporting, but you control it through its own sales channel settings rather than the Agentic section.

On 13 October 2026 Shopify's developer changelog announced Shop MCP, a hosted server that lets any compatible AI agent search Shopify Catalog, build carts and complete Shop Pay checkout for a signed-in shopper, naming Claude and ChatGPT as clients that handle the sign-in. The changelog says orders placed this way appear in the merchant's Shopify admin like any other order.

How agentic storefront orders show up in Shopify

Shopify says orders from AI channels display in your admin with channel or referrer attribution, and its March announcement said ChatGPT orders arrive with ChatGPT referral attribution.

The Agentic section reports four measures for each AI channel: sales, orders, online store sessions from that channel, and online store conversion, calculated as sessions that completed checkout divided by sessions. Sales combine referral sales and direct-checkout sales. A Total sales report across all AI channels sits under Explore in the same section. Shopify notes that this performance data is not yet available for headless stores.

For an order placed through direct checkout, Shopify says the channel has access to the customer's name, email address, phone number and physical address, but not your full order history, orders from other sales channels or your general customer database.

What direct checkout does to analytics and attribution

Every Shopify channel page with direct checkout says that Google Analytics and custom pixels will not fire, and that only server-to-server pixels for checkout started and completed do. The Meta page adds that this applies to any direct checkout completed outside your online store.

So a direct-checkout order has no storefront session behind it. GA4 will not record the purchase and your ad platforms' browser pixels will not see it, while the order still counts in Shopify's sales. The gap between Shopify's order count and your analytics' purchase count grows as AI channels sell more.

The redirect channels are different: a ChatGPT shopper lands on your store, and your analytics sees the session and the order, as long as the referrer or a tag in the link survives the trip. Our guide to tracking ChatGPT traffic covers how each assistant shows up in referral data.

How Arktis handles agentic storefront orders

Arktis's tracker runs on your storefront and sees the visits AI channels send there. It recognises ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude and Gemini by their referring sites, and its AI Assistant Traffic panel on the Ads & Attribution page counts sessions and conversions for each. Visits that arrive with no referrer and no tags and land on a page other than your home page, which is common from apps, are counted as dark social on the Ads & Attribution page rather than as direct.

Shopify orders arrive by webhook from the day the store connects, with no bulk import of earlier orders. Shopify's webhook reference says the orders/create topic occurs whenever an order is created. Each order is matched to a visit on email where the store has identified the visitor, otherwise on the UTM source of a session from the previous 24 hours, which can be another visitor's session.

A direct-checkout order has no store visit to match. Arktis stores the landing page, referring site and UTM tags that Shopify sends with an order, but it does not read Shopify's channel or attribution information, so it cannot tell that the order came from Gemini, Copilot or Meta. Unless the buyer's email matches a visitor your store has identified, the order arrives unmatched and appears under Direct on the Revenue page, which shows revenue net of refunds. If the email does match, Arktis matches the order to that visitor's most recent visit, which may have come from a different source entirely.

The practical check is to set Shopify's Agentic total sales beside the Direct line on Arktis's Revenue page for the same period. If AI direct checkout is growing, part of your Direct revenue is AI channel revenue.

Should you keep direct checkout on?

Direct checkout means fewer steps for the shopper. The case against is in Shopify's own list of what does not work there. Some checkout blocks may not load, including upsells, loyalty and rewards, address autocomplete and blocks that collect consent for communication preferences, and Meta's direct checkout supports no checkout blocks at all. Subscriptions, product bundles and customisable products cannot be sold through direct checkout. Local delivery, pickup in store and pickup points are not offered, and you cannot require customers to sign in.

If those matter to you, turn direct checkout off for the channels concerned: in Sales channels, then Agentic, switch off Allow Shopify to manage for me, open the channel, deactivate Direct checkout and save. Shoppers can still find your products there, but they finish on your own checkout, where your analytics and pixels run.

Removing a channel's Catalog access entirely can take up to 7 days to take effect, and your products can still be found through web crawling and indexing. To hide a product from AI channels completely, Shopify's help centre points to the Unlisted status, which also hides it from search engines such as Google and from your own store search.

Where Arktis does not fit

Arktis is not a sales channel or a checkout, and it cannot see inside an AI conversation or a direct checkout. It does not import Shopify's Agentic reports or read the channel on an order, so it cannot tell you how much Gemini or Copilot sold; Shopify's Agentic section can. It does not send events to Meta's Conversions API or to any ad platform, so it will not fill the pixel gap that direct checkout leaves in your ad accounts.

An order matched on the UTM source of a recent session can be credited to another visitor's session, and visitors are identified per browser, so a shopper who asks ChatGPT on a phone and buys on a laptop is not joined across devices. Orders from before you connected Shopify are not imported in bulk.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Shopify agentic storefronts?

Agentic storefronts are Shopify's feature for selling a store's products inside AI channels such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta surfaces such as Muse. Shopify supplies product data through Shopify Catalog, or through Google Merchant Center for Google, and the feature is active by default for eligible stores. You manage it under Sales channels, then Agentic, in the Shopify admin.

Which AI channels check out inside the chat?

Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and Meta surfaces such as Muse can complete purchases in a Shopify-powered direct checkout inside the AI channel, on by default for eligible stores. ChatGPT is a discovery channel that sends shoppers to your own online store checkout, in an in-app browser or a new tab. Any channel with direct checkout turned off also sends shoppers to your store.

Do Google Analytics and pixels track agentic storefront orders?

Not for direct checkouts. Shopify says Google Analytics and custom pixels do not fire in the direct checkouts of Google AI Mode and Gemini, Copilot and Meta, and that only server-to-server checkout started and completed events fire. ChatGPT orders go through your own checkout, so on-site analytics sees them as normal.

Where do I see orders from AI channels in Shopify?

Orders from AI channels appear in your Shopify admin with channel or referrer attribution. The Agentic section under Sales channels reports sales, orders, online store sessions and online store conversion for each AI channel, and a Total sales report across all of them. Shopify says this performance data is not yet available for headless stores.

How does Arktis handle orders from AI direct checkout?

Arktis receives Shopify orders by webhook, but a direct-checkout order has no store visit to match, and Arktis does not read Shopify's channel information. Unless the buyer's email matches a visitor the store has identified, the order arrives unmatched and appears under Direct on the Revenue page. For which AI channel made the sale, use Shopify's Agentic report.
