Christmas Marketing Ideas 2026: A December Plan for Stores

December is the one month when the shopper's main question is not what to buy or how much it costs, but whether it will arrive in time. Most Christmas marketing ideas ignore that and repeat the November playbook with snow on it. This guide plans December around the dates that actually change behaviour, from the first of the month to New Year's Eve, with what to measure at each step.

The short answer: plan December around your last order date, and measure each phase in Arktis

The best Christmas marketing ideas for an online store follow the calendar of delivery, not of discounts. Work out your last order date for Christmas delivery from your carrier's send-by date, which for USPS in the contiguous US is 17 December for Ground Advantage, 18 December for Priority Mail and 19 December for Priority Mail Express. Then run December in four phases: a countdown to that date, a faster-shipping push in the days between your standard and express cut-offs, digital gift cards once nothing physical can arrive, and an after-Christmas plan for sales, exchanges and gift card recipients from 26 December.

For measuring which of those phases produced orders, Arktis is the clear winner for an online store. Tag each phase with its own UTM campaign and Arktis counts conversions per campaign, from matched orders and the conversion events its tracker records, next to your ad traffic, and on Growth you can filter the session recordings you have captured to visitors who converted and to sessions that included your shipping or gift card page. Plans are $49, $149 and $349 a month, with a 7-day free trial on Growth.

The last column is a worked example for a store that ships the business day after an order is placed. It is our arithmetic, not a USPS date, and it moves earlier if you need longer to pack.

Key takeaways

Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday, and USPS recommends sending by 17, 18 or 19 December for expected delivery before 25 December in the contiguous US, and by 9 or 16 December for international mail. Your own last order date is that date minus your dispatch time, stated as a date and a time in one time zone. Between your standard and express cut-offs, faster shipping is the offer. After the express cut-off, sell digital gift cards, which Shopify delivers by email and which US federal rules protect from expiring within five years. From 26 December, switch to an after-Christmas sale, easy exchanges and a welcome for gift card recipients. Measure each phase as its own campaign.

Work out your last order date

The carrier's date is when the parcel must be in the carrier's hands, not when the customer must order. Your last order date is the carrier's send-by date minus the time it takes you to pick, pack and hand over a parcel, minus any day you do not dispatch.

Take an invented store that dispatches orders the business day after they are placed and does not ship on weekends. For Ground Advantage, the parcel must go by Thursday 17 December, so the last order date is Wednesday 16 December. If the store packs the previous day's orders each morning and hands them to the carrier at 3pm, an order placed late on Wednesday still goes out on Thursday, but one placed after midnight does not, so the realistic cut-off is the end of Wednesday 16 December in a time zone you name. Write the cut-off as a date and a time, because "order by the 16th" means different things in California and New York.

Remember that these are recommendations. USPS says that actual delivery dates vary with origin, destination, acceptance time and other conditions, and that Ground Advantage to Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and the US territories can take ten days or more. UPS and FedEx publish their own holiday dates; check the carrier you actually use.

Christmas marketing ideas for the first half of December

Run an order-by countdown

From 1 December, show the last order date for standard shipping on every product page, in the basket and in the header, and put it in the subject line of your December emails. A visible deadline gives a reason to buy now. Update it the day it passes, so the site never promises a date it can no longer meet.

What to measure: orders per day in the ten days before your standard cut-off, against the same days of the previous year if you have them.

Narrow the range to what can still arrive

A December edit of best-sellers that are in stock and ship from your fastest location is easier to shop than a long gift guide, and it saves the shopper from finding the perfect item and then learning that it is on back order.

What to measure: conversion rate of sessions that viewed the edit, and the share of December orders that included an item from it.

Do not forget international and military customers

USPS's international send-by date is 9 December for First-Class Package International and Priority Mail International to every region it lists. Ground Advantage to military APO, FPO and DPO addresses is due by 4 November for every military ZIP group USPS lists, with 9 December for First-Class Mail and Priority Mail. If you sell abroad or to military families, send these customers a separate email with their own dates well before the domestic countdown.

What to measure: international orders placed before 9 December, by country.

Sell faster shipping between the cut-offs

Between your Ground Advantage cut-off and your Priority Mail Express cut-off there are one or two days, depending on whether you dispatch on a Saturday, when faster shipping is the most useful thing you can offer. If you pay for part of the upgrade, price it against your margin rather than treating it as free. Our contribution margin guide shows how.

What to measure: orders per day after the standard cut-off, and the share of orders that chose the faster service.

Switch to digital gift cards once nothing can ship in time

Once your express cut-off has passed, physical products cannot reach the recipient by Christmas, but a gift card can. Shopify's help centre says gift cards are available on all Shopify plans, that a customer or recipient receives the gift card by email with a unique code when the order is fulfilled, and that gift cards are set by default to fulfil automatically when an order is paid. Orders that Shopify flags as medium or high risk are held for manual fulfilment, so check them on the 24th. Buyers can add a recipient, with the gift card sent then or when scheduled, if your theme supports recipient fields. Check that it does before 19 December.

Know the rules. US Regulation E, at 12 CFR 1005.20, sets a federal floor: a gift card's funds may not expire earlier than five years after it was issued or last loaded, and allows a dormancy or inactivity fee only after a year with no activity, and no more than one such fee a month. Some states go further, so check the law where your customers live before you set any expiry. Shopify's own default is that gift cards do not expire, and if you set an expiry date, the default length is five years. Loyalty, award and promotional cards given away with an offer are treated differently under the same rule, so read it before you run a gift-card-with-purchase promotion.

What to measure: gift card sales after your last shipping date. Shopify's gift card finance reports track gift card sales and gift card payments on orders.

Keep Christmas Eve and Christmas Day simple

On Thursday 24 December and Friday 25 December, the only things worth saying are that gift cards still arrive instantly and when your after-Christmas sale starts, if you have one. A discount email on Christmas Day to people who paid full price a week earlier invites unsubscribes.

What to measure: gift card orders on the 24th and 25th, and unsubscribes per send.

Christmas marketing ideas for 26 to 31 December

Decide whether to run an after-Christmas sale at all

Adobe's 2026 forecast expects discounts of up to 10 to 15 percent through December, well below the Cyber Week peak of up to 30 percent. An after-Christmas sale from Saturday 26 December can clear seasonal stock and capture gift card spending, but it also teaches customers to wait. Run it on the products you want to clear, not on everything, and exclude customers who bought the same items at full price in December.

What to measure: orders and contribution margin on the after-Christmas campaign, and how many of those orders came from new customers.

Turn the returns week into exchanges

The days after Christmas are when unwanted gifts come back. Put an exchange or store-credit option ahead of a refund in the returns flow, and make gift returns possible without the buyer's order number where your platform allows it. The holiday marketing ideas guide covers explaining your returns window before the purchase.

What to measure: the share of December returns that become exchanges or store credit.

Welcome gift card recipients as new customers

Someone who received your gift card on Christmas morning may never have visited your store. Make the landing page they reach from the gift card email a proper introduction, with best-sellers in a range of prices and a clear way to apply the code.

What to measure: gift card redemptions between 25 and 31 December, and whether the order total exceeded the card value.

How to measure each Christmas phase

Give each phase its own utm_campaign, such as xmas26-countdown, xmas26-express, xmas26-giftcard and xmas26-after-sale, with a consistent source and medium on every email, social post and ad. The free UTM builder keeps the names straight.

Arktis captures those UTM parameters and ad click identifiers such as gclid and fbclid on landing and holds them against the visitor across sessions. Shopify orders arrive by webhook and are matched to a visit on email where the store has identified the visitor, otherwise on the UTM source of a session from the previous 24 hours, which can be another visitor's session. Unmatched orders are kept, unattributed. The Top Campaigns table on the Ads & Attribution page lists the ten combinations of UTM campaign, source and medium with the most sessions in the range you pick, with sessions, conversions and conversion rate, and the Campaign Performance section on the Data page shows the ten UTM campaigns with the most conversions. Arktis also detects dark social as its own source, meaning visits from messaging-app referrers and visits with no referrer or UTM tags that land deeper than the home page, which is where gift links shared between friends and family tend to show up.

A campaign that runs in the busiest fortnight of the year will look good on almost any attribution model; only a holdout, such as a test that runs the campaign in some regions and not others, tells you what it added.

Where Arktis does not fit

Arktis does not send email or SMS, manage gift cards, set shipping rates or process returns; those stay in your store platform and email tool, and gift card redemptions are best read in Shopify's own reports. It has no heatmaps and no A/B testing. It identifies visitors per browser, so a gift researched on a phone and bought on a laptop appears as two visitors.

Plan the month before it starts

Work out your last order dates now, put them in your December emails and site banners, and tag each phase before 1 December. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the last day to ship for Christmas 2026?

USPS recommends sending by Thursday 17 December for Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail, Friday 18 December for Priority Mail and Saturday 19 December for Priority Mail Express, for expected delivery before 25 December in the contiguous US. International send-by dates are 9 December, or 16 December for Priority Mail Express International. These are recommendations, and USPS says actual delivery dates vary.

How do I set a last order date for Christmas?

Start from your carrier's send-by date and subtract the time you need to pick, pack and hand over a parcel, plus any days you do not dispatch. A store that ships the business day after an order and uses USPS Ground Advantage would set Wednesday 16 December as its last order date. State it as a date and a time in one time zone.

What should an online store sell after the Christmas shipping cut-off?

Digital gift cards, because they arrive by email. Shopify says gift cards are available on all plans and are delivered by email with a unique code when the order is fulfilled, which by default happens automatically when the order is paid. Make sure your theme supports recipient fields if you want buyers to send the card straight to the recipient.

Can gift cards expire in the US?

Under Regulation E, at 12 CFR 1005.20, the funds on a gift card may not expire earlier than five years after the card was issued or last loaded. Dormancy or inactivity fees are allowed only after a year without activity and no more than once a month. This is a federal floor, and some states go further. Loyalty, award and promotional cards given away with an offer are treated differently under the same rule.

Should I run an after-Christmas sale?

Only on the products you want to clear. An after-Christmas sale from 26 December can move seasonal stock and capture gift card spending, but discounting everything teaches customers to wait for it. Measure the sale's orders and contribution margin as a separate campaign, and exclude customers who bought the same items at full price in December.
