Google Universal Cart: Checkout, Cart Transfer, Analytics

Google Universal Cart lets shoppers collect products from many stores in one cart inside Google Search and the Gemini app, then either pay with Google Pay without leaving Google or carry the cart over to the store's own site. For a merchant, those two endings look completely different in analytics: one produces an order with no visit to your store, the other produces a visit that starts halfway through the purchase. This guide covers what Google launched in the US on 15 October 2026, how merchants take part, and how to measure it.

The short answer: Universal Cart is Google's cross-store cart, and Arktis measures the store side of it

Universal Cart is an AI-assisted shopping cart that Google rolled out in the US on 15 October 2026 across Google Search, including AI Mode, and the Gemini app. It saves products from different retailers, tracks price drops and restocks, shows promo codes and suggests which payment card to use. At checkout the shopper either pays with Google Pay inside the cart at participating stores or transfers the items to the merchant's own cart. Both run on the Universal Commerce Protocol, and in both cases the merchant remains the seller of record. Merchants join through a UCP integration hub in Google Merchant Center that is rolling out gradually in the US to selected merchants.

Arktis takes no part in Universal Cart and does not replace Merchant Center's reports. What it is the clear winner for is the store side: a transferred cart that lands on a storefront page running its tracker becomes a visit Arktis records, and it matches Shopify orders back to visits and puts them beside your ad clicks, UTM campaigns and AI assistant traffic, while Google Pay orders it cannot match to a visit stay in revenue under Direct instead of disappearing. Plans are $49, $149 and $349 a month, with a 7-day free trial on Growth.

Key takeaways

Universal Cart is live for US shoppers in Search and the Gemini app, and Google's May announcement said YouTube and Gmail would follow. Google documents no separate sign-up for the cart; merchants integrate with the Universal Commerce Protocol, apply through an interest form, and, once selected, enable cart transfer, native checkout or both in Merchant Center. Google says many Shopify merchants already offer its checkout options, and Shopify turns on Google AI Mode and Gemini direct checkout by default for eligible stores. Google Pay orders leave no visit for on-site analytics to find, and transferred carts arrive with the shopping already done, so both change what your conversion figures mean.

What Google Universal Cart is

Google announced Universal Cart at Google I/O on 19 May 2026, describing it as a cart that works across merchants and across Google's services, and said it would roll out in Search and the Gemini app in the US that summer, with YouTube and Gmail to follow. The launch post of 15 October 2026 confirmed the US rollout across Google Search and the Gemini app.

Google lists four things the cart does. It saves products from different retailers in one place, so a handbag saved in AI Mode and a sweater saved in Gemini sit in the same cart. It watches prices and stock using the Shopping Graph, which Google says holds more than 60 billion product listings, and notifies the shopper about price drops and restocks. Because it is built on Google Wallet, it suggests which of the shopper's cards to pay with and shows relevant promo codes. And it ends in a purchase, either with Google Pay in the cart or on the merchant's site.

Google names Nike, Sephora, Target, Ulta Beauty, Walmart, Wayfair and many Shopify merchants among the stores offering these checkout options.

Google Pay checkout versus cart transfer

Google Pay checkout

With Google Pay checkout, the shopper buys from the cart without visiting your site. Merchant Center's help page on UCP-powered checkout says customers pay with payment methods and shipping details already saved in Google Wallet and stay in the Google Pay flow, that the feature currently uses card numbers stored in Google Wallet, and that the checkout happens on Google's surfaces while you remain the merchant of record. Only products carrying the native_commerce(checkout_eligibility) attribute in your product data show the Buy button.

Cart transfer

With cart transfer, the shopper clicks a button such as Checkout on merchant, and Google sends the whole cart to your system in one request through the UCP Cart API. Your system creates the cart and answers with a continue_url, the address of the pre-filled cart on your site, and the shopper lands there to finish. Google's developer guide says the transfer is one-way in this initial release: updating, deleting or synchronising the cart between Google and your system is not supported, and native checkout is not required for cart transfer.

Which merchants can take part, and how to register

Google documents no separate sign-up for Universal Cart. Google Merchant Center's help centre describes the UCP integration hub, which Google's developer guide places under Settings, then UCP integration, as rolling out gradually in the US, with Australia and Canada to follow next year. The steps are to complete the technical implementation in Google's UCP developer guide, fill in the interest form, and wait to be notified that you have been selected. Selected merchants then get the onboarding experience and a sandbox to test their UCP profile, cart transfer and native checkout, and can choose capabilities including cart transfer, native checkout on Google and identity linking.

For Google Pay checkout you do not need a Google Pay button on your own site, but you do need a Google Pay and Wallet Console account, and your payment provider has to be integrated with the Google Pay API, unless you process payments directly, which also needs encryption set up and PCI compliance documentation. Google's developer page for the hub says it applies only to products sold within the United States. Stores that work through a platform are told to ask the platform about its UCP plans.

What Shopify merchants should know

For many Shopify stores, this decision has already been made by default. Shopify's help centre says direct checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini is active by default for eligible stores, still rolling out, and open to stores that sell to customers in the US, Canada or Australia and have a valid Google Merchant Center account with products synced. Search Engine Roundtable reported on 22 September 2026 that Google was emailing Merchant Center users whose Shopify stores had been matched, saying native checkout on AI Mode and Gemini was now enabled and could be turned off in the Shopify admin under Sales channels, then Agentic.

Shopify lists what that checkout does not support: subscriptions, product bundles, customisable products, local delivery and pickup, required sign-in, and some checkout blocks such as upsells. It also says Google Analytics and custom pixels do not fire there; only server-to-server checkout started and completed events do. To send Google shoppers to your own store instead, switch off Allow Shopify to manage for me, open Google AI Mode and Gemini, and deactivate Direct checkout. Shopify's help pages do not mention Google's Universal Cart by name, so which Universal Cart option a Shopify store gets is not documented there, and the Universal Cart API on Shopify's developer site is a separate Shopify product for AI agents, in early access. Our guide to Shopify agentic storefronts covers the other AI channels.

What Universal Cart means for store analytics

Google Pay orders have no store visit

An order paid inside the cart never loads your storefront, so GA4, your ad platforms' browser pixels and any on-site tracker miss the purchase, and anything that matches orders to site visits has no visit to match. The order still reaches your order system, which means your store's order count and your analytics' purchase count drift apart as these sales grow.

Transferred carts arrive halfway through

A transferred cart lands on whatever page your continue_url points to, typically a cart or checkout page, with products already chosen. That inflates the conversion rate of whatever channel the visit is filed under, because the browsing happened on Google. Google's developer guide does not say what referrer a transfer carries, so check your referral reports for visits that start on a cart page. If you run your own UCP integration, your system writes the continue_url, which makes it the natural place for your own UTM tags; if a platform runs it for you, the address is the platform's to set.

Read Merchant Center's UCP analytics

Google's guide describes a UCP Analytics tab under Settings, then UCP integration, available to all UCP-enabled merchants with the Performance role. It reports clicks on the Buy button, purchases, purchase rate, average order value, cancellations, account linking and top-selling UCP products. For Shopify stores, the Agentic section in the Shopify admin reports sales and orders for the Google AI Mode and Gemini channel.

How Arktis counts Universal Cart traffic and orders

Arktis's tracker runs on your storefront, so a transferred cart that lands on a page it runs on is recorded as a visit and classified like any other: by UTM tags and ad click identifiers first, then by referrer. A visit from google.com with no tags or click identifier is filed under Google organic search, one from gemini.google.com appears in the AI Assistant Traffic panel on the Ads & Attribution page, which counts sessions and conversions from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Claude, Gemini and similar assistants, and one with no referrer and no tags that lands on a page other than your home page is counted as dark social on the Ads & Attribution page.

Shopify orders arrive by webhook from the day the store connects, with no bulk import of earlier orders. Each is matched to a visit on email where the store has identified the visitor, otherwise on the UTM source of a session from the previous 24 hours, which can be another visitor's session. A Google Pay order has no store visit, and Arktis does not read Shopify's channel information on the order, so unless the buyer's email matches a visitor your store has identified, the order arrives unmatched and is listed under Direct on the Revenue page, which shows revenue net of refunds.

So the useful comparison is Merchant Center's UCP purchases, or Shopify's Agentic sales for Google, beside the Direct line on Arktis's Revenue page for the same dates.

Where Arktis does not fit

Arktis has no connection to Merchant Center, the Universal Commerce Protocol or Google Pay, and it does not import Google's UCP analytics, so it cannot tell you how many shoppers added your products to their cart or paid on Google. It does not send conversions to Google Ads or import Google Ads spend, which can be entered by hand per period only on a site with no Meta connection. Visitors are identified per browser, so a shopper who builds a cart in the Gemini app on a phone and transfers it on a laptop is not joined across devices. For what Google sold inside the cart, Merchant Center and Shopify are the records.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Google Universal Cart?

Universal Cart is a shopping cart that works across retailers inside Google Search, including AI Mode, and the Gemini app. It tracks price drops and restocks, shows promo codes and suggests payment cards, and ends with either Google Pay checkout or a transfer of the items to the merchant's own site. Google launched it in the US on 15 October 2026.

How do merchants get into Google Universal Cart?

Merchants integrate with the Universal Commerce Protocol, fill in Google's interest form and wait to be selected, after which the UCP integration hub in Merchant Center lets them test and enable cart transfer and native checkout. Google says the hub is rolling out gradually in the US, with Australia and Canada to follow next year. Stores on a platform such as Shopify should check what the platform has already enabled.

What is the difference between Google Pay checkout and cart transfer?

With Google Pay checkout the shopper pays on Google using cards saved in Google Wallet and never visits the store, while the merchant stays the seller of record. With cart transfer, Google sends the cart to the merchant's system, which returns a link to a pre-filled cart on its own site where the shopper completes the purchase. Cart transfer does not require native checkout.

Do Universal Cart orders show up in Google Analytics?

Orders paid with Google Pay inside the cart do not pass through your storefront, so on-site analytics such as GA4 does not record the purchase, and Shopify says Google Analytics and custom pixels do not fire in Google AI Mode and Gemini direct checkout. Transferred carts do reach your site, as visits that begin on a cart or checkout page. Merchant Center's UCP Analytics tab reports Buy clicks and purchases for UCP-enabled merchants.

Can Shopify merchants turn off Google's native checkout?

Yes. In the Shopify admin under Sales channels, then Agentic, switch off Allow Shopify to manage for me, open Google AI Mode and Gemini and deactivate Direct checkout. Shoppers can still find your products, but they are sent to your online store to complete the purchase.
