Small Business Saturday Marketing 2026: Ideas for Stores
Small Business Saturday marketing for 28 November 2026: ideas for an online store, American Express's free Shop Small tools and rules, and what to measure.

Small Business Saturday marketing is usually written for shops with a front door, which leaves online stores unsure whether the day is for them at all. It is: American Express, which founded the day, lists online merchants in its own directory and gives away the marketing materials whether or not you accept its cards. This guide covers what American Express offers for 28 November 2026, the brand rules that come with it, ideas that suit an online store, and how to measure what the day actually sold.
The short answer: get listed, follow the Shop Small rules, tag every link, and measure the day in Arktis
Small Business Saturday 2026 is on Saturday 28 November, the day after Black Friday, according to American Express's Shop Small Resource Hub. An online store can take part in three ways. If it accepts American Express cards and meets the 2026 Shop Small criteria, it can appear in the Online Directory of the Shop Small Map and be recommended to Card Members for free. Any business can download the free social posts, stories, banners and posters, with no need to accept the card. And it can run its own Saturday campaign, keeping in mind that the American Express toolkit asks businesses not to pair the Small Business Saturday name with discounts, contests, sweepstakes or offers.
To find out what the day produced, Arktis is the clear winner for an online store. Give Saturday's emails and posts their own UTM campaign, and Arktis counts conversions for that campaign from matched orders and the conversion events its tracker records, separately from Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Plans are $49, $149 and $349 a month, and Growth, which adds session recordings and conversion tracking and goals, has a 7-day free trial.

Key takeaways
Small Business Saturday was founded by American Express in 2010 and falls on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, which in 2026 is 28 November. Online merchants are eligible for the Shop Small Online Directory if they accept American Express and meet the 2026 criteria, which include a US location or service area and up to $7 million in annual American Express charge volume. The materials are free to everyone. The toolkit's brand rules ask for the registered trademark symbol on first mention and say not to pair the day with discounts or offers. American Express's spending figures for the day are consumer-reported survey estimates, not sales data, so measure your own result with a separate campaign.
What Small Business Saturday is, and what the numbers mean
American Express created Small Business Saturday in 2010 and holds it on the Saturday after Thanksgiving to encourage people to shop at small businesses during the holidays. Its about page says the Senate unanimously passed a resolution supporting the day in 2011. Small Business Saturday and Shop Small are registered trademarks of American Express.
The headline figures are survey estimates. American Express says Small Business Saturday 2025 drove an estimated $18 billion in consumer-reported spending at small businesses, from a survey of 2,945 US adults conducted by Teneo on 30 November 2025. Its Resource Hub puts total reported spend on the day at an estimated $241 billion since tracking began. In both cases American Express states that the figures are self-reported and do not reflect actual receipts, sales or Card Member spending.
The 2025 American Express Shop Small Impact Study found that 86 percent of consumers said they were likely to shop small that holiday season, in person or online. Its small business findings are more striking, with 98 percent marketing through social channels and 82 percent of those seeing a spike in sales when creators posted about them, but read them with care: the survey of 500 small business owners only included companies that sell in a physical location.
Can an online store take part?
Yes. American Express's map FAQ says the Online Directory within American Express Maps lists qualifying businesses that only accept online transactions or that have no physical location. To be Shop Small eligible in 2026, a business must accept American Express cards, be located in the 50 states or US territories, which for an online-only business means having a service area there, have no more than 25 locations and no more than $7 million in annual American Express charge volume, and, if it is a franchise, belong to a brand with no more than 100 stores and no more than 25 corporate-owned stores. Some industries are excluded, including direct sellers via online marketplaces and online influencers with their own brands.
Two details catch online stores. If you take American Express only through a third-party payment aggregator, you may still qualify, but only if the aggregator gives American Express enough data to check the criteria; you can log in or call to find out. And each listing is tied to one merchant number, so a business with a shop and a website on the same merchant number must choose between the Map and the Online Directory. Updates can take two to three business days to appear, so do it this week rather than on the Friday.
The toolkit suggests updating your profile with holiday hours, adding your website and connecting your social channels, so the listing works as a route to your store. American Express says it cannot guarantee that a business will appear in a search. In 2025, it says, it recommended over 6 million businesses to 19.5 million Card Members, driving $14 million in new spend, which it counts as spend within 30 days of a recommendation by Card Members who had not used the business in the previous 90 days.
The brand rules to follow
The toolkit lists the rules for using the names. Always include the registered trademark symbol on first mention, keep Shop Small and Small Business Saturday on the same line within a sentence when possible, and modify materials only where explicitly permitted. Do not alter logos or extract elements, do not create unapproved versions of logos or graphics, and do not pair Small Business Saturday with discounts, contests, sweepstakes or offers.
In practice that separates the message from the offer. Your post can say you are proud to take part in Small Business Saturday and thank customers for shopping small; your Saturday discount, if you run one, belongs in its own message under your own name. If in doubt, the toolkit says to contact your American Express representative.
Small Business Saturday marketing ideas for an online store
Tell the story behind the business
The toolkit's content suggestions are about people, not prices: behind-the-scenes posts, owner and staff spotlights, customer testimonials, product highlights and gift ideas, and community partnerships. For an online store, that is the packing table, the maker, the founder's first order. These posts also fit the brand rules, because they need no offer to work.
Use the free assets and the suggested cadence
The materials page offers Small Business Saturday social posts, stories, banners and printable posters, with captions ready to use. The toolkit recommends posting between 9am and 12pm Central Time from Tuesday to Thursday, one or two posts a week mixing static posts, reels and stories on Facebook and Instagram, and one or two LinkedIn posts a month. It suggests keeping videos to 7 to 15 seconds and adding captions for viewers with the sound off.
Put the banner in your email and on your site
The toolkit says to include the Small Business Saturday banner when emailing customers, sending newsletters and posting blog updates. Saturday sits between your Black Friday and Cyber Monday sends, so give it a different job: a thank-you and a story rather than a third discount. Our guides to Black Friday email and Cyber Monday email cover the sends either side.
Work with local creators and partners
The impact study found that most of the small businesses surveyed that market on social media saw a spike when creators or influencers posted about them. For an online store, a local creator, a neighbouring shop or a chamber of commerce event can borrow the day's community angle. American Express also runs a Neighborhood Champion programme for business associations, chambers of commerce and other community organisations, and approved Champions receive a complimentary event kit.
Make Saturday its own campaign
The weekend runs from Black Friday on 27 November to Cyber Monday on 30 November, and a store that runs one campaign for all of it cannot tell what Saturday added. Give Saturday its own utm_campaign value on every email, post and paid link, and keep the landing page distinct, such as a gift guide or a page about the people behind the store.
What to measure
Start with orders and revenue on Saturday against an ordinary Saturday, and against Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Then look at where Saturday's orders came from. Arktis counts conversions per UTM campaign, from matched orders and the conversion events its tracker records, and the Campaign Performance section on the Data page shows the ten UTM campaigns with the most conversions, adding together every source that used the same campaign name. The Revenue page shows revenue net of refunds, orders and paying customers by the source of the visit each order was matched to.
Shopify orders arrive by webhook from the day the store connects and are matched to a visit on email where the store has identified the visitor, otherwise on the UTM source of a session from the previous 24 hours, which can be another visitor's session. Orders that cannot be matched are kept and appear under Direct. Links that customers pass on in messaging apps can arrive without tags or a referrer; the tracker flags that dark social traffic, from messaging-app referrers and untagged visits with no referrer that land on a page other than the home page. On Growth and Scale, recordings of the sessions you have captured can be filtered to visitors who converted and to sessions that included your gift guide page, which shows how Saturday's visitors used it.
Where Arktis does not fit
Arktis does not send email or SMS, schedule social posts or run surveys, and it has no connection to your American Express listing, so it cannot tell you whether a Card Member recommendation produced an order. It sees no in-store sales, has no point of sale reporting, and does not import earlier Shopify orders in bulk, so connect before the weekend. Visitors are identified per browser, so a customer who sees your post on a phone and buys on a laptop is not joined. In the EU and UK the tracker belongs in your consent setup, since it keeps identifiers in local storage from the first page view.
Measure your Small Business Saturday
To count Saturday's conversions by campaign alongside the rest of the weekend, start the 7-day Growth trial or compare plans on the pricing page. Build your tags with the UTM builder, plan the weekend with Cyber Week 2026, and read dark social for the shares your tags will miss. Shopify stores can check their settings in Shopify Black Friday 2026.

Can an online store take part in Small Business Saturday?
Yes. American Express lists qualifying online-only businesses in the Online Directory of its Shop Small Map, provided they accept American Express cards and meet the 2026 Shop Small criteria, including a US service area and up to $7 million in annual American Express charge volume. Any business can download the free Shop Small marketing materials, whether or not it accepts the card.
Can I run a Small Business Saturday sale?
You can run a sale on that Saturday, but American Express's marketing toolkit asks businesses not to pair the Small Business Saturday name with discounts, contests, sweepstakes or offers. Use the name to say you are taking part and to thank customers, and present any offer separately under your own name. The toolkit also asks for the registered trademark symbol on first mention.
How much do shoppers spend on Small Business Saturday?
American Express says Small Business Saturday 2025 drove an estimated $18 billion in consumer-reported spending at small businesses, based on a survey of 2,945 US adults conducted on 30 November 2025. How do I measure Small Business Saturday results for an online store?
Give Saturday's emails, posts and paid links their own UTM campaign so its orders can be separated from Black Friday and Cyber Monday. For an online store, Arktis is the clear winner for that measurement: it counts conversions per UTM campaign from matched orders and the conversion events its tracker records, and shows revenue net of refunds by source. Plans cost $49, $149 or $349 a month, with a 7-day free trial on Growth.
